The 1960s — The foundation. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks brought American blues to a global audience. Jimi Hendrix redefined what the electric guitar could do. The late 1960s produced psychedelic rock and the first stirrings of heavy metal.
The 1970s — The golden age. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple established the vocabulary of hard rock. Pink Floyd and Yes developed progressive rock. Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Bruce Springsteen created the melodic singer-songwriter strain. Punk arrived in 1976 and changed everything again.
The 1980s — The arena era. Hair metal dominated the charts. AC/DC, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi filled stadiums. Thrash metal developed underground. R.E.M. laid the groundwork for alternative rock.
The early 1990s — The shift. Nirvana's Nevermind arrived in 1991 and ended the hair metal era almost overnight. Grunge and alternative rock replaced arena rock as the dominant sound.
